Part 1, 658pp. There are no maps in this part however countries are described and the section “de l’Inde” commences on 276p and has further sections on “De l’empire du Mogol” 277p, “De la presqu’Isle de l’Inde deça le Gange” 290p and “De la presqu’Isle de l’Inde delà le Gange” 301p. Inde is described and places mentioned include Surate, Cabul, Candahar, Decan, Goa, Malabar, Maduré, Calicut, Zamorin, Cochim, Travancor, Cranganor, Coromandel, Meliapor, Narsingue, Bishagar, Golconda.
Part 2. The link is for the 1663 printing and the only part of the book that has been scanned starts on 169p, however the index at the back shows that the sections on Inde, which are present, are named as in part 1 hence “de l’Inde” commences on 186p and has further sections on “De l’empire du Mogol” with a map 190p, “De la presqu’Isle de l’Inde deça le Gange” with a map 196p and “De la presqu’Isle de l’Inde delà le Gange” with a map 200p. The text is similar to part 1.

Thereafter there are many mentions of Inde and places in Inde. The voyages of the Portugese discuss the Malabar coast, relations with the Roys de Cochin, Coulan, Cananor and Zamorin. This is interspersed with news from other conquests around the world. No dates are mentioned.

Being a collection of texts this book does not have continuous page numbering. Pages referenced are for the scanned page number, which is continuous. As the title inplies this collection is about Africa and America, however there is one reference to Goa and Cananare, 343p, and a number of references to le Gange, which is included in lists of major rivers. Inde as a country is not mentioned.

In Chapter 5 one group stop en route and describe the Isle de Bourbon before going on to Madagascar, then Surate (pp. 34-36) before going on to Siam. Another group of bishops travel via Mozambique and then to Surate. Chapter 9 is a description of Surate and the country (p. 53).It describes the Mogols as masters of the country. The book then notes (p. 61) that “après cette longue digression” it returns to the subject of Siam and there is little mention of India after that as the book concentrates on Siam, Camboy, Cochinchine and Tonkin.

Volume 2 discusses the religions of Russia, the Middle East including Turkey, Perse and the Tartares. Indes is mentioned 4 times in general terms.
Volume 3 refers to the religions of the Indes Orientales and Occidentales. The first chapters concern Chine, Lao and Corée. Part 1, 304pp. This is a technical manual about ship building, lists of ships and their tonnage etc, tide tables and navigation. There is a section on “observation des dangers en la mer de Indes Occidentales ou Orientales, dans leur route depuis le Cap Verd”, 228p, which mentions Cambaye and la mer de Bengala, 230p. There are longitude and latitude tables which include Asie and Le Grand Mogol, Decan, Malabar, Goa, Calicut, Coromandel and Gelionde etc., 248 and 249p.
Part 2 has a separate frontpiece. DASSIÉ. C. R. Le routier des Indes Orientales et Occidentales. Paris: JEAN DE LA CAILLE, 1677, 214pp. The book commences with the best season to make a voyage and is followed by the routes for Indes Orientales, 4 to 164p. The first route is from France to le Cap de Bonne Esperance; notable other routes being Mozambique to Goa, 35p; Bonne Esperance to Goa or Cochin, 44p; Montbaza to Goa, 55p; Goa and Cochin to Bonne Esperance, 58-75p. There are other routes to Malaca, Macoa, Japon and Chine. From 165p the book continues with the routes for Indes Occidentales. Towards the end of the book there are sections on “Profondeurs des havres et rades” including “La coste des Indes” which mentions Goa, Mangalor, Cananor etc., 202p.

The voyage left France in March 1671 and arrived at Surate in October of that year (p. 34). The author then goes on to describe Surate, as well as the local kings including the Princes de Malabar. He left Surate in January 1672 for Goa (p. 59) and then describes Goa and the ships found there, as well as the Princes du Samorin and the palace. He then went on to Cananor and the Cap Comorin (p. 93) and then Trinquemale in Ceylon. A battle with Dutch ships took place and he was captured and then seems to have sailed up the East coast of India with the Dutch via Negapatan and then on to Bengala at the mouth of the Ganges. After Bengala he left for Batavia. The author suffered a shipwreck, but was rescued and arrived in Batavia in January 1673 (p. 211). There follows many pages of description of Batavia and the Dutch until he left for Amsterdam on a Dutch fleet in November 1674 via the Cape of Good Hope. After Amsterdam the author travelled back to Paris arriving in France in August 1675. This book may also be referenced under East Indies in Goldsmith.

The funerary practices of the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Turks etc. are set out in individual chapters. There is no separate chapter for India, however in Chapter XI called “Sepultures Ignées” on pp. 127-130 there is a section starting with “Ceux qui se bruloient eux-memes estoient les Indiiens” and goes on to discuss the burning of bodies and mentions “les Bracmanes qui estoient leurs Docteurs” and seems to be about India. There are no other references to India.

The book has 5 parts with continuous page numbering as follows: I, 1-53p; II, 54-125p; III, 126-167p; IV, 186-240p and V, 241-370p. Only parts IV and V are subdivided into chapters. The additional part, 371-567p, is “Nouvelle relation de l’interieur du serrail de grand seigneur” of Constantinople. The multiple references to Inde and places in Inde are therefore concentrated in the first 370p of the book. The places mentioned include Goa 20x, Surate 40x, Mogol 36x, Cochin 8x, Golconda 6x, Gange 11x etc. Chapter XI, 306p, is about Cochin and the siege of Cochin. Book III has a lot of data on trade with Indes including dyes, precious metals, cloth and where it comes from (144p) and the price of goods from 156-164p.
