Translated Books 1980 – 1989

This earliest expression of Śaiva devotion in Tamil by the poetess from Karaikkal is published with an outstanding translation by Karavelane (Léon Saint-Jean, a lawyer and freedom fighter from Karaikkal, where he inaugurated in 1937 a French Institute of Indology). It remains a landmark, and the preface (1956), by Jean Filliozat, a valid charter for French Indology. The new edition is enriched by a complete glossary/concordance of the poems, a full translation by Vinson (1906) of the story of the poetess as given by the Periyapurāṇam, and a substantially improved iconography. The postface explores the legends and controversial iconography of Kāraikkālammaiyār and attempts to define her literary originality in terms of Śaiva devotion and mythology.

Cette première expression de la dévotion śivaïte en langue tamoule par la poétesse de Karaikkal est publiée avec une remarquable traduction de Karavelane (Léon Saint-Jean, homme de loi et ‘nationaliste’ indien militant né à Karaikkal, où il inaugura en 1937 un premier Institut français d’Indologie). Elle demeure une référence obligée, et la préface (1956) de Jean Filliozat, une introduction aussi pertinente à l’indologie française. La nouvelle édition est enrichie d’un index vocabulaire exhaustif des poèmes, de la traduction complète (1906) par Vinson de l’histoire de la poétesse selon le Periyapurāṇam, et d’une iconographie considérablement augmentée. La postface explore les légendes et l’iconographie controversée de Kāraikkālammaiyār et tente de définir son originalité littéraire en termes de dévotion śivaïte et de mythologie.
